The direction was decent and the pace is nice and skippy, but if I had any other complaints other than the occasional overacting of one or two members of the cast, the writers could have developed the script a tad. Sleeping Murder is a classic murder mystery novel by Agatha Christie, featuring her famous detective, Miss Jane Marple. Geraldine McEwan does give one of her better performances as Miss Marple, and as Joanna and Jerry Emilia Fox and James D'Arcy are appealing enough. The acting is very, very good, Harry Enfield overdoes it just a tad as Symmington and I didn't care for Ken Russell very much as the vicar, but Frances DeLa Tour, Talullah Riley, Imogen Stubbs, Keith Allen and John Sessions all turn in solid work. While taking a few minor liberties, it does respect the book somewhat, and manages to be absorbing in terms of plot and stylish in terms of production values, as they were really delightful here. ![]() While not 100% perfect, "Moving Finger" is by far one of the better ITV Marple adaptations. As far as this series has gone, I liked "Murder is Announced", "Murder at the Vicarage" and in some ways "4.50 From Paddington" but was disappointed in "Sleeping Murder", "Nemesis", "Body in the Library" and especially "Sittaford Mystery". ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() While cooking at Westminster Cathedral, Paterson cooked an original dish, Peaches Cardinal Hume. Paterson's uncle, Anthony Bartlett, was Gentiluomo to the Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, and so one episode was videotaped at Westminster Cathedral and another at an Irish convent. They travelled to various destinations, such as an army garrison and an all-girls school, where they prepared large meals, often with unusual ingredients. It sported the registration N88 TFL (the British bingo call for number 88 is "Two Fat Ladies", initialised in the suffix "TFL" of the registration) and had a Watsonian Jubilee GP-700 "doublewide" sidecar where Dickson Wright rode. The show centred on Jennifer Paterson and Clarissa Dickson Wright travelling the United Kingdom for most of the episodes, except for one episode in Ireland and a Christmas special in Jamaica, on a Triumph Thunderbird motorcycle driven by Paterson. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The multilayered work is dynamic and heart-wrenching as culture, grief, and desire are encompassed in the novel. Solomon delves into Yetu’s characterization through her exploration of identity and self while also discussing the devastations of slavery through fiction. ![]() It is the job of the Historian, to carry the community’s memories along with the echoes of emotional trauma from such events. The novel follows the story of Yetu, a member of the Wanjuri who has chosen to carry the burden of being a Historian. The Wanjuri swim along the sea in ignorant bliss without carrying the weight of memories of the suffering of their past ancestors. The mermaid-like clan has no long-term memory, instead choosing to live in the moment without the burden of the past. The novel focuses on the story of the water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African women who were thrown overboard from slave ships: the Wanjiru. Illustration design by Micah Epstein (2019) “The Deep” by Rivers Solomon, Daveed Diggs, William Hutson, and Jonathan Snipes is captivating and thought-provoking, in the story readers are introduced to an underwater world plagued with horrific historical events intertwined with mysticism. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But these characters are, for the most part, rather unpleasant and ornery types that you would never spend 5 seconds with in person, so why would we want to spend hours listening about them? The "resolution" is underwhelming and anyone with half a brain could have figured out the fate of the missing character - anyone with law enforcement experience could have told you after the first chapter what was going down. There are descriptions of idyllic scenery up the yin-yang, so much so that one appears right before the ending of the book! Who cares what the sunset looks like - can you please tie up the loose ends and give us SOME satisfaction for having invested 14-plus hours of listening to this tome? Sometimes a slow-listening novel has payback at the very end, or at least something to justify its glacial pace and keep you interested. ![]() At one point I had listened to 2 hours and nothing of note had transpired. It's a pseudo-"Western" plot that could have come out of a John Ford movie, transplanted to the west of Ireland. Don't pick up this book expecting to listen to a thriller, or a whodoneit, or anything similar to French's murder mysteries. ![]() ![]() ![]() Today, she lives in South Carolina with her family and writes full time, using her fantasy worlds as an excuse to continue talking to herself.
